New opportunities with the Horizon Green Deal call

Following the proclamations of latest months, amplified by the epidemiological emergency in progress, the European Commission has launched a call for funding under the Horizon 2020 program in the context of the European Green Deal.

As it is known, the European Green Deal is an action plan that aims to restore biodiversity, reduce pollution, promote the efficient use of resources and manage the transition to a circular economy. Notably, the plan consists of investments and financing instruments that must be used in a way that guarantees a fair and inclusive transformation.

In this perspective, the Horizon Green Deal call represents a measure with a total value of 1 billion euros, allocated by the European Union to finance research and innovation projects, in order to tackle the climate crisis and help protect ecosystems and biodiversity in Europe, giving impetus to economic recovery following the crisis caused by the coronavirus.

It is the latest of the calls that are part of the Horizon 2020 program and differs from the previous ones since it aims to achieve effective results in the short and medium term, while pursuing a vision of long-term change.

There are twenty procedures covered by the call for proposals and they concern different sectors of interest for environmental issues, including: investments in technologies, support for industrial innovation, biodiversity and ecosystems, the introduction of more sustainable forms of mobility, the decarbonization of the energy sector, the improvement of the energy efficiency of buildings, the collaboration with international partners and the implementation of the knowledge economy.

The procedures are open to all legal entities recognized by the laws of the Member States that have joined the program, including Italy.

The budgets allocated for each project vary according to the complexity of the object from a minimum of three to a maximum of approximately twenty million. In consideration of the significance of their amounts, the procedures may sometimes require multiple participation through aggregation with entities based in other Member States.

The deadline for submitting applications is set for January 26th 2021 and the selections are expected to end in the final months of the same year.
